Rick Santorum just offered up what may be the evening’s most wince-inducing moment: he declared that he had voted for President George W. Bush’s No Child Left Behind education law even though “it was my against my principles.”
For a presidential candidate, it was a curious — and unusual — acknowledgement of politics trumping values.
Mr. Santorum suggested that he had backed the bill, despite his reservations, to assist a Republican president with a major policy initiative, referring to himself as a “team player.”
The political advisers over at Mitt Romney’s campaign headquarters must be salivating. Mr. Santorum may have just handed them footage for a potent attack advertisement.
